Virginia Extended Unemployment

August 3rd, 2009 Posted in Extended Unemployment Benefits

virginia Virginia Extended UnemploymentAccording to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for Virginia is 7.3%. You might be someone who has been affected by the rate of unemployment and are wondering what to do when your benefits come to an end.

Thanks to Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC), you have an additional 20 weeks of temporary EUC that you can use.

These benefits are available once you have used up your regular Virginia unemployment compensation. To be eligible, you can have no rights no normal unemployment compensation or extended benefits. Also, you cannot be receiving compensation under Canadian unemployment compensation law.

The Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) has mailed out more than 18,000 EUC Tier II applications in June of 2009. More than 10,000 applications were filled out and returned to the VEC, which is processing them as fast as possible, but could take up to five weeks to get them all processed. If you’ve submitted you application, please wait at least three weeks before you contact the VEC.

If you have not received an application but you think you are eligible, request one from your local VEC office. Go online to www.vec.virginia.gov/vecportal/index.cfm and you can find a VEC office.
Your Virginia weekly benefits will still be the $25 extra that your normal unemployment benefits have had since February 28, 2009. If you are receiving Alternative Trade Adjustment Assistance (ATAA) benefits, you are not eligible for the extra $25 a week.

Since Virginia unemployment insurance law controls the receipt of EUC benefits, you do not have to meet separate continuing eligibility requirements. What this means to you is that to be eligible, you just need to meet the requirements that you normally meet when you collect Virginia unemployment benefits.

Be sure to fill out any application you receive for emergency unemployment compensation and return it to the Virginia Employment Commission. If you haven’t received an application and you think you are eligible, be sure to ask one of the VEC offices. As a person who is unemployed in the state of Virginia, it is up to you to do everything you can to have a source of income.

I have a copy of my completed form, but cannot find the address to mail it to. Please send the address to my email ASAP. Thanks for your help.

Thank you for this information, I was hoping you could clear a few more things up for me.

1.) You have to wait until the last benefit is paid before the EUC application is sent? So it is possible that I will have absolutely no income for up to 5 weeks while this application and the first payement under EUC is paid?

2.) I cannot seem to find any information about EUC eligibilty requirements, do you know the criteria?

3.) Since my job search has been a disaster and haven’t received a single reply with hundreds of applications out there. I am considering going back to school to obtain a degree. Could unemployement benefits be extended while attending school? How long?

Thank you very much for your help?
